Lawmakers Should Put an End to Surprise Medical Bills

Please share this post with others about surprised billing and tag your legislator.

“Other states’ solutions have generally avoided making patients play a role in deciding how surprise medical bills are settled, and Michigan should follow their lead.

The bill also would allow providers to appeal to the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services if they believe the amount they received was miscalculated. Providers would also be allowed to request binding arbitration with insurers through the department.

This section of the legislation would likely balloon the size of this department and increase the state’s control in an already heavily regulated industry. Lawmakers have an opportunity to give relief from surprise medical bills, but as it stands, the proposed legislation needs amendments to make sure it doesn’t saddle them with even more bureaucratic entanglements”
